A ringworm infection is a skin condition caused by fungi. The name of the infection is in itself misleading since it hints that worms are the causal agents. Research has estimated that around 20% of the population is infected by one form or another of the disease at any one moment. Considering the population size, that is quite a big number. People should therefore be aware of the signs and symptoms of the condition so that treatment can commence as early as possible. This will help reduce the rate of spread since the main propagation method of the skin infection is through contact.
Although there are different treatment techniques the cream for ringworm like Phytozine and Lotrimin are most widely used. As they offer instant itching relief & soothes the skin they are most preferred.
Signs and symptoms of infection on different body parts
A ringworm infection most times announces itself by appearance of raised red patches of skin. The red coloration forms in the shape of a ring. The infected region may become itchy and scaly. If the scalp is infected, bald patches may appear. Infection of the feet results in athlete’s foot; athlete’s foot is a condition that results in dry and scaly feet, and it may blister in extreme cases.
Fingernails and toenails are also prone to infection. If infected, they become chapped and discoloured and cracking follows. The nails also thicken and in extreme cases, they may fall off entirely. The condition is medically known as onychomycosis. The groin region can also be affected resulting in a condition normally known as ‘jock itch’. The groin region becomes itchy and uncomfortable. This version of the condition can be quite embarrassing.
It is important to note that ringworm patches may start to ooze and blister if not attended to. Moreover, they tend to spread from one region to another. It is therefore important that the condition be arrested as early as possible to prevent spreading to other people and other body parts.
Animals are also prone to infection by ringworm’s. It is important to be aware of this fact because a ringworm infection can easily spread from an animal to a human. It therefore becomes necessary to not only ensure high individual hygiene levels, but also high animal hygiene. Domestic animals such as cats, cattle, sheep and goats are the most affected. Of these, cats are the riskiest because they are household pets that are petted and fondled often.
A ringworm infection can be easily treated by application of anti-fungal creams that can be easily sourced from a pharmacy. Infected areas should be kept as dry as possible to facilitate faster healing.
